Gordon & MacPhail

Since its founding in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail has handled new make spirits from over 100 distilleries across Scotland.
Gordon & MacPhail carefully selects wood that enhances and nurtures their spirits. Sherry casks are crafted in Jerez, Spain, according to strict specifications and are seasoned before being transported to Scotland. At the same time, they also source the highest quality ex-bourbon casks from North America.
With four generations of experience, a whisky bearing the Gordon & MacPhail name is only released when it has matured in carefully selected casks and is deemed to be at the perfect moment.

The History

  • 1895: Founded as a grocery store in the Speyside region of Scotland. Initially, they offered a wide range of goods from around the world, including tea, coffee, and wine, but founders James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail were captivated by the diverse single malt Scotch whiskies of Speyside and began offering Scotch whisky.
  • 1915: A young John Urquhart joined the business as an apprentice under the two founding partners. Urquhart quickly established himself as a valued associate of James Gordon, selecting, purchasing, and maturing whisky from local distilleries. He was also involved in creating house blends for customers throughout Speyside. John Urquhart honed his skills as a master of malt whisky maturation and built an impressive portfolio of aged whisky casks.
  • 1933: George Urquhart, who would later become known as a pioneer in the whisky industry, became the second generation to lead the company.
  • 1940: Under the direction of John Urquhart, fifteen first-fill sherry butts were filled at Glenlivet and matured in Warehouse No. 6 at the distillery. Some of these casks would quietly rest in the warehouse, eventually making history as the oldest single malt Scotch whiskies in the world.
  • 1945: During the dark days of World War II, when distillation had nearly ceased due to barley rationing, they continued to mature whisky. Thanks to the foresight of George and John, who filled large quantities of whisky in the late 1930s and early 1940s, they were able to maintain healthy stocks when peace was declared in 1945.
  • 1968: George Urquhart launched the "Connoisseurs Choice" range, bottling single malts from distilleries across Scotland. This series would go on to set the trend for single malts worldwide.
  • 1991: Expansion throughout the UK. The company moved from an office above the South Street store to a custom-built office and a taxed warehouse (George House) on Boroughbriggs Road.
  • 1993: Acquired Benromach Distillery. After five years of careful restoration, Benromach Distillery was officially reopened in 1998 by Prince Charles.
  • 1995: 100th anniversary.
  • 2010: Released Generations Mortlach 70 Years Old, the world's oldest single malt Scotch whisky. Unveiled at a special event at Edinburgh Castle, it attracted global media attention and sold out within two weeks.
