Until the independent bottler Until independent bottler Adelphi opened its distillery in 2014, no legal whisky had been produced on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula. However, Adelphi is not the first distillery to bear its name. The original Adelphi Distillery, built in 1826 in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, was purchased by Archibald Walker in 1880. Remarkably, it became the only distillery at the time producing whisky in Scotland, Ireland, and England. By 1887, it was producing over 500,000 gallons of malt and grain whisky annually. The distillery was acquired by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) in 1903, and its pot stills were decommissioned four years later. Grain whisky production continued until 1932. The site is now home to Glasgow's Central Mosque. In 1993, Archibald Walker's great-grandson, Jamie Walker, founded Adelphi as an independent bottler. The company was subsequently purchased by its current owners in 2004.
